Scrubs S7 E7 - After the strike

So for no particular reason it seems Scrubs is the first television series to return after the recent writers' strike. And can I just take a moment to mention how glad I am it's over, so I can have new episodes of all the TV. Scrubs though seems more pointless than most right now. It suffers from the same problem that almost every sitcom suffers from, that after a year or two the characters turn into caricatures of their previous selves.

Scrubs has been suffering from this malady particularly acutely of late. The episodes seem to be getting awfully repetitive. The tactic scrubs seems to be adopting is to do this knowingly, but really that just tends to annoy me more than without. In a few 'recent' episodes they've mentioned how they've had similar conversations 'a couple of weeks ago'. Yes, yes you did. If it annoys the other characters, then think how much it annoys the viewers.

Fortunately, and unlike some other sitcoms, I still find Scrubs funny. There is the occasional flash of amusing dialogue as well as some great situational and conceptual humour, the space invaders game and the introduction of Brinner standing out in this episode. But they really need to either end the show or find a way to get some fresher storylines in. A couple of seasons ago they did an episode were most of it was recycled, and talked about how things happen more than once. But the clip show they did last year was awful. And the way the characters seem to be doing nothing but repeat the slightly lame and hackneyed small piece of character development is beyond irritating.

Apparently there has been talk of a season 8. I hope it doesn't happy. I respect the show runner, who apparently stood up to the network and refused to do a half-baked finale where the season would have ended if the strike had gone longer. That kind of network disregard for basic plot resolution is one of the worst aspects of television (cf: Firefly), but the show really does need to come to an end.
